Types of Massage: The Complete Guide to Choosing Yours
How many types of massage actually exist, and how do you know which one you need? The options are overwhelming — from classic Swedish technique to clinical physical-therapy methods — and most guides you'll find mix everything together without distinguishing what's relaxation, what's medical treatment, and what's just marketing. Here's the honest, organized version.
In this guide
- How massage types are actually classified
- The 7 massages we offer at Diamond Spa, explained one by one
- Other types that exist in manual therapy, even ones we don't offer
- How to choose the right one for what you need
- Contraindications you should know before booking any of them
What exactly is massage, and why are there so many types?
Nearly every modern Western massage traces back to the same technical foundation: Swedish massage, developed in the 19th century, which combines five core strokes — effleurage (gliding), petrissage (kneading), friction, tapotement (percussion), and vibration. From that base, almost every "type" of massage that exists today is really a variation: the pressure changes, the pace changes, the goal changes, sometimes the tools change — but most techniques share that common origin.
That's exactly why the classification can feel confusing. You're not really choosing between completely different techniques — you're choosing between variations in intensity and purpose built on the same foundation.
The short version
The right question isn't "what types of massage exist?" — it's "what does my body need right now?" Relaxation, pain relief, athletic recovery, or specialized care.
The 4 broad groups of massage
Before getting into specific types, it helps to know which group each one belongs to — so you know what to expect before booking.
| Group | Goal | Examples | Who typically performs it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relaxation & wellness | Reduce stress, improve sleep | Swedish, relaxing, hot stone | Spa therapists |
| Therapeutic & clinical | Treat pain, injuries, dysfunctions | Deep tissue, structural, physical therapy | Physical therapists, kinesiologists |
| Sports & recovery | Prevent injury, speed up recovery | Sports massage, percussion therapy | Sports therapists |
| Specialized | A very specific need | Lymphatic drainage, prenatal, scalp | Certified specialists |
Not every massage is trying to do the same thing — and knowing which group the one you want belongs to is half the work before you book.
Swedish (relaxing) massage — the most requested, and its own upcoming guide
Swedish massage — what most people simply call a "relaxing massage" — is the most requested style worldwide, and it's not by accident. It uses long, flowing strokes and gentle pressure, designed to calm the nervous system rather than treat any specific issue. At Diamond Spa we work with the classic Swedish technique, adapted to what each person needs that day.
We're putting together a full dedicated guide to this one — covering technique, ideal session length, and exactly what to expect start to finish — so for now we're just introducing it. If you want the details and want to book right away, you can do that directly on our relaxing massage page.
The other 6 massages we offer at Diamond Spa
Deep Tissue Massage
When tension isn't just stress but real muscle knots, a relaxing massage falls short. Deep Tissue works deep muscle layers with sustained pressure — it's more intense, can leave you a bit sore the next day, and is built specifically to release chronic tightness in the neck, back, and shoulders.
Sports Massage
It's not a relaxing massage with a different name — it combines deep manual therapy with a percussion gun, focused on real muscle recovery after training. If you run, lift, or play any sport regularly, sports massage is probably what your body actually needs, not the relaxing one.
Hot Stone Massage
The heat from the stones does something hands alone can't: it relaxes the muscles at a deep level before the manual work even starts, allowing for deeper pressure with less discomfort. Hot stone massage is also, simply, a different kind of experience — great if you get cold easily or want something outside the ordinary.
Four Hands Massage
Two therapists, one rhythm, working at the same time. It's not "double the massage" — four hands massage is a completely different sensory experience the body processes on its own terms. Great for special occasions or when you want to take relaxation to the next level.
Duo Massage
A private room, two therapists, two people — each with their own personalized session, at the same time. Duo massage is perfect for couples, friends, or any occasion worth sharing.
Sensitive Massage
The most different of the seven: gentle movements combined with varied textures, designed to awaken the senses beyond what a conventional massage achieves. Sensitive massage is a complete experience, in an exclusive, private setting.
Other types of massage that exist (and that we'd rather not offer without proper certification)
Being honest also means telling you what exists outside our menu, without pretending we offer it.
Manual lymphatic drainage
A very specific technique using minimal pressure, aimed at stimulating the lymphatic system — different from any of our massages. We covered it in depth, with the science behind it, in our article on slimming massages.
Clinical massage therapy (physical therapy)
Applied by physical therapists and kinesiologists for medical — not aesthetic — purposes, to treat injuries, muscular dysfunctions, or rehabilitation. It requires a prior professional diagnosis. If you have a diagnosed injury or condition, the right place is a physical therapy clinic, not a spa.
Scalp massage
Focused exclusively on the scalp, aimed at stimulating local circulation. It's a real, genuinely requested type of massage, even though it isn't part of our current menu.
Prenatal massage
Requires specific training in technique and pregnancy-adapted positioning, with real contraindications depending on the trimester. It's a legitimate massage type with documented benefits when performed by someone properly trained — not something to improvise.
General contraindications you should know about
- Fever or active infectious illness.
- Deep vein thrombosis or severe diagnosed circulatory issues.
- Open wounds or skin infections in the area to be treated.
- First trimester of pregnancy, without medical clearance.
- Any diagnosed medical condition — check with your doctor first.

Frequently asked questions
How many types of massage are there?
There's no fixed, universal number — depending on how they're classified, guides mention anywhere from 8 to 20 distinct types. Most are variations of classic Swedish technique, adapted to a specific goal: relaxation, pain treatment, athletic recovery, or specialized care.
What's the most common type of massage?
Swedish (relaxing) massage, both by search volume and by bookings. It uses the classic Swedish technique and aims for general wellbeing rather than treating a specific issue.
What's the difference between a relaxing massage and a therapeutic one?
A relaxing massage aims for general wellbeing with gentle pressure. A therapeutic massage treats a specific dysfunction — pain, injury, chronic tension — with technique adapted to a diagnosis, typically applied by a physical therapist.
What type of massage is best for back pain?
Deep Tissue is generally the most suited for chronic muscle tension and pain. Interestingly, a 2011 randomized controlled trial found relaxation massage worked just as well as structural (deep-tissue-style) massage for chronic low back pain — see the source below. If the pain comes from a diagnosed injury, the right first step is a physical therapist, not a spa.
What types of massage does Diamond Spa offer?
Seven: Swedish (relaxing), Deep Tissue, Four Hands, Duo, Hot Stone, Sports, and Sensitive. Each with its own technique and purpose, available in El Poblado, Medellín.
How do I know which type of massage I need?
It depends on your goal: relaxation (Swedish massage), muscle pain (Deep Tissue), athletic recovery (Sports), or a different kind of experience (Hot Stone, Sensitive, Four Hands, or Duo).
Choosing the right type of massage is less about following a trend and more about understanding what your body actually needs today. If you're still not sure, our team at Diamond Spa can help you decide before you book — just message us.
